Home schooling does not have to be expensive with a
diligent parent. It can even be less than traditional school because you
don't have fundraisers, school clothes, money for field trips, supplies
and other unexpected expenses. I will write more about budget schooling,
but for now, I will give you some ideas to get your OWN thought processes
flowing. You have the greatest resources right at your at your fingertips
and in your neighborhoods.
The Internet is a resource. From books online,
dictionaries, encyclopedias, to worksheets, tutorials and crafts, you can
find almost everything you need on the Internet at no charge. The skill
needed is to be able to search for what you need, create a bookmark list
and make sure you save that list somewhere off your computer, just in case
of that big computer crash. [big grin].
Your library is your another great resource. Get
to know your library staff, find out if they have special teacher
privileges. Many libraries allow teachers to check out books and videos
for longer than the average patron. Plan on at least one day a week at the
library. Some libraries even have free or low cost classes on computer,
library skills and such. This is a very valuable resource.
Don't forget your community. Travel books
are great sources of homeschool field trips that are low cost or even
free. Use your local museums, parks and organizations for learning
opportunities. Ask people for interviews, tours of their businesses and
assistance in learning something about their jobs. You will be amazed at
the help you can get if you only ask.
